Men's Golf Ties for Third at Pinehurst Intercollegiate

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team wrapped up action at the 2009 Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon, finishing in a tie for third with a three-day total of 13-over par 877 (295-285-297). The Spartans carded a nine-over par 297 in today's final round.
Sophomore Graham Baillargeon paced the Spartans, tying for eighth at one-over par 217 (74-70-73). Baillargeon, who scored a final round one-over 73, earned his fourth top-10 finish in seven events this season. For the tournament, he had eight birdies and played the par-5s at five-under par.
Junior Jack Newman finished tied for 11th, a stroke behind Baillargeon at two-over par 218 (75-69-74). Newman had a birdie and 14 pars in his round of two-over 74 today. He led the Spartans this week with 41 pars.
Sophomore Payne Gniewek and redshirt freshman Phil Snow were among a group tied for 29th at six-over par 222 with identical rounds of 73-73-76. Snow led MSU with 12 birdies for the tournament, while also adding an eagle, and played the par-5s at a team-best eight-under par. Senior Jordan Ensrud ended in a tie for 44th at nine-over par 225 (78-73-74).
Penn State won the team title with a two-under par 862, after posting an impressive nine-under par 279 today. The Nittany Lions' TJ Howe claimed the individual title at seven-under par 209, capped by a final round five-under par 67.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday March 29 for the three-day Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif.
