EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State defeated the Toledo Rockets 5-2 Saturday, Feb. 7 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The match was the seventh-straight win for the Spartans, all of which came at home. The seven wins mark the best start to the dual season for MSU since 2003, when the team won its first eight matches.
MSU started strong, with the doubles team of senior John Allare (Mason, Ohio) and junior Jason Norville (Farmington Hills, Mich.) defeating Robbie McCallum and Sven Burus, 8-2 at the No. 2 position. Meanwhile, senior Alex Forger (Okemos, Mich.) and sophomore Clark Richardson (Leawood, Kansas) posted an 8-6 win over Jay Miller and Wake Ward to attain the doubles point for the Spartans. The duo of Forger and Richardson are 5-0 so far in dual play, and 8-1 overall this season.
The momentum carried into singles play with the Green and White taking four of the six points. Playing at No. 1 singles, Allare posted a win over Jared Miller defeating him 6-3, 6-2. Forger defeated Sven Burus at No. 2 singles winning 6-0, 6-3, contributing to his 4-1 singles record, while at No. 4 singles, senior Scott Rasmussen (Moraga, Calif.) held on to defeat Aleksander Elezovic in a tie-braking set, 4-6, 7-5 (7) making his singles record 6-0 in dual play this season. Freshman Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) topped Gursher Harika in dominating fashion, 6-2, 6-2 to round out the Spartans singles wins.
The Spartans take to the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at Western Michigan, with play beginning at 1 p.m.
