EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team wrapped up the first day of the Stan Drobac Invitational Friday, Oct. 9, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. Cleveland State, Green Bay, Dayton, University of Illinois at Chicago and IUPUI all traveled to MSU to compete in the inaugural event. Senior Brendan Kinkopf (Cleveland, Ohio) went undefeated in doubles action with two different partners.
The hidden-dual tournament moved indoors due to adverse weather conditions, but began promptly at 2:30 p.m. as scheduled. The doubles portion of the tournament was played first with MSU facing off against Cleveland, Dayton and Green Bay.
The Spartans had trouble in the beginning, picking up only one doubles match against CSU. The tandem of Kinkopf and sophomore Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) topped Jay Jones and Aris Spirtos of CSU, 8-3, to pick up the lone win for the Spartans.
MSU turned things around as it picked up three wins against Dayton. Kinkopf paired with senior Joe Vallee (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) to defeat Austin Weigand and Bryce Warhock, 8-5. Sophomore Austin Brooks (Houston, Texas) and junior John Stratton (Monroeville, N.J.) topped Mike Rohana and Matt Sherman 8-6, while freshman Will Davis (Louisville, Ky.) and junior Clark Richardson (Leawood, Kan.) posted an identical score over Rob Fox and Chris Klepatz.
MSU carried the momentum into its third round of doubles action against Green Bay. Stratton and Brooks teamed together again to post a victory over Fabian Gogolin and Matt Nelson, 8-3. The tandem of Vallee and senior Jason Norville (Farmington Hills, Mich.) went on top Josh Oothoudt and Marko Skoric, 8-5. The freshmen pairing of Davis and Denis Bogatov (Gurnee, Ill.) impressed as they defeated Matt Clogg and Mike Wesley, 8-6, while Hulewicz and Kinkopf remained a team as they downed Paul Swanson and Phil Dresden, 8-6.
Davis also paired with Paul Swenson of Green Bay to defeat the IUPUI tandem of Mike Koscielski and Andrew Nixon, 8-6.
"We got off to a slow start in first round, but we picked it up in the other two rounds after that," said head coach Gene Orlando. "There are still a lot of areas for improvement, but this is what the fall is for; to get sharp and get ready for spring. Finding the right doubles teams and trying different mixes to see what works best is what we are doing right now."
Singles action is slated to begin tomorrow at 11 a.m., the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts, weather permitting. In the case of rain or poor weather, the matches will move to the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
