Men's Tennis Begins ITA Qualifying Matches

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team traveled to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament which is being held Oct. 15-19 at the University of Michigan. Qualifying singles matches were played today, where the Spartans saw three advance to further play, which will take place tomorrow.
Through two rounds of singles matches, junior John Stratton (Monroeville, N.J.), sophomore Austin Brooks (Houston, Texas) and freshman Will Davis (Louisville, Ky.) will continue on to play tomorrow along with freshman Denis Bogatov (Gurnee, Ill) and sophomore Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) who were both previous qualifiers.
Stratton first took Detroit opponent, David Stabley, by storm as he defeated him 6-1, 6-0. He went on to outlast Jon Polenac of DePaul in a three-set match, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Brooks received a bye in the first round, automatically advancing him to the qualifying round were he posted a win over Chris Klepatz of Cleveland State, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(1), to continue on to Friday's action.
Davis also received a bye, and then claimed a close victory over Terence Weigand of Toledo, 7-5, 7-5, to advance on for the Green and White.
Senior Joe Vallee (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.), junior Clark Richardson (Leawood, Kan.) and senior Jason Norville (Farmington Hills, Mich.) also competed in the qualifying round, but did not advance on to further play.
Richardson topped Tariq Ismail of Youngstown State in the first round but fell to Micah Lemoine of Illinois State, 6-4, 7-6 (2). Both Norville and Vallee fell in the second round in three-set matches.
