Men's Tennis Concludes Play at Drobac Invite

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team brought the Stan Drobac Invitational to a close on Sunday, Oct. 11, at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. Doubles action was played indoors at 9 a.m. and singles moved outdoors at 12 p.m. Sophomore Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) did not drop a single match throughout the three-day tournament in both singles and doubles action, boasting an overall record of 8-0.
The Spartans had a solid start to the day, defeating all doubles opponents. Junior John Stratton (Monroeville, N.J.) teamed with sophomore Austin Brooks (Houston, Texas) to top Klingenberg and Yunes of IUPUI while seniors Jason Norville (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Joe Vallee (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) partnered to post a victory over Harbo and Robare of the University of Illinois at Chicago, 8-6. The freshmen tandem of Denis Bogatov (Gurnee, Ill.) and Will Davis (Lousiville, Ky.) topped Klapatz and Fox, 8-6. Hulewicz joined junior Clark Richardson (Leawood, Kan.) to defeat Nixon and Koscielski of Dayton, 8-4.
Singles action saw similar results from the Green and White, dropping only two of the seven matches. Hulewicz defeated Shafer of IUPUI, 6-0, 6-2, to pick up his eighth overall win of the tournament between singles and doubles play. Bogatov outlasted Klingenberg of IUPUI, 6-4, 7-5, and Davis defeated UIC opponent Shepardson, 6-3, 6-3. Richardson posted a win over Spirtos of Cleveland State, 6-2, 6-3, and the final match was claimed for the Spartans when Vallee defeated Nixon of Dayton, 7-5, 6-1.
The Spartans will continue fall play as it hosts the Big Ten Indoor Tournament, Friday, Oct. 30, through Monday, Nov. 2, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
