EAST LANSING, Mich. - The 10th-ranked Michigan State field hockey team remained undefeated with a 3-2 overtime win over Stanford. Junior Jeamie Deacon (Wexford, Ireland) recorded the game-winning goal 3:23 into extra time. MSU is now 3-0 overall, while Stanford falls to 0-2 on the year.
Senior Geraldine Raynor (Maronoera, Zimbabwe) connected on a penalty corner to put the Spartans on the board at 6:51 of the first half with assists from Chantae Miller (East Amherst, N.Y.) and Gwen Riley (Louisville, Ky.). Stephanie Byrne tied the game at 20:27, and Jaimee Erickson tallied a goal a little over five minutes later to put the Cardinal up 2-1 at the half. It was the first time this season the Spartans trailed at halftime.
Junior Floor Rijpma (Bunnik, The Netherlands) scored an unassisted goal at 38:16 to tie the game, putting back her own rebound with a shot from the right side. MSU had a penalty corner in the final minute of regulation, but could not convert, sending the game to the extra period. The overtime goal scored by Deacon came off a penalty corner, the first called in the extra time. Assists on the game-winner went to Joelle van Ierland (Den Dolder, Netherlands) and Rijpma.
"We do the penalty corner a lot in practice," said Deacon. "The ball bounced when it came to me, so I got it on the bounce. It was a good finish, but we could've done better. It's a relief to come out with the win."
The Spartans improve to 6-2 overall against the Cardinal, and are 3-0 on the season for the eighth time in program history.
Junior Elissa Unger (Reading, Pa.) made three saves in goal for her third win of the season, while Beth Ridley made six saves for Stanford. Michigan State had 16 shots in the game, and six penalty corners.
"I'm relieved," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "We give our compliments to Stanford. It's the best I've seen them play in my 10 years at State. The team learned that they need to do more than show up to a game, and it was learned the hard way. We have a few areas to work on."
The Spartans host No. 18 Syracuse on Sunday at noon.
