EAST LANSING, Mich. - Junior Jeamie Deacon has been named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after recording seven points in two Spartan wins over ranked teams this past weekend. The award is the fourth of her career.
A native of Wexford, Ireland, Deacon led the Spartans to a 3-1 win over 16th-ranked Ohio State on Friday with a goal and an assist for the team's first conference victory. She then continued her six-game scoring streak Saturday, helping the team to a 3-2 overtime win against No. 20 California with a goal and two assists, including the tally to send the game into overtime and an assist on the winning goal. Deacon recorded a team-high 10 shots in the game.
After starting the season with just four points in three games, Deacon has tallied 14 points in six games since, seven of which have come in the last two contests. She is now second on the team in points with 18, and leads the team with eight assists. Deacon is tied for second in the Big Ten in assists, and is eighth in points.
Last season, Deacon earned three Offensive Player of the Week honors, the most ever for any Spartan in a single season. Deacon is the second player to garner Player of the Week honors from the Big Ten this season, as junior goalkeeper Elissa Unger (Reading, Pa.) was named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15.
Deacon and the Spartans return to action this weekend. On Friday the Spartans host Indiana in a Big Ten game at 6 p.m., then take on Temple in a non-conference match-up on Sunday at 12 p.m.
