EVANSTON, Ill. -
Michigan State men's tennis finished the Wildcat Invite with players winning in both singles and doubles consolation play. Freshman Austin Brooks (Houston, Texas) took wins in both singles and doubles to lead the Spartans, while sophomore John Stratton (Farmington Hills, Mich.) won in singles play.
Brooks defeated Gentry Kaegi of Iowa in singles consolation play with a notable record of 6-1, 6-0. He teamed up with sophomore Billy Gardner (Colombia, Mo.) for a win over Sven Burus and Robbie McCallum of Toledo by a score of 9-8(6) in doubles consolation play.
Stratton posted a 6-4, 6-1 win in singles consolation play, defeating Mitch Osborne of Bradley University.
Gardner, sophomore Clark Richardson (Leawood, Kan.) and junior Tyler Sauerbrey. (Marshall, Mich.) all fell short in singles consolation play after three-set tie-breaking matches.
"I think we saw some mixed results again," said head coach Gene Orlando. "There were some good things, but there are still things we need to improve on. Overall, we are a better team than we were the last time we competed. We just need to get better each time we play. There are twelve days until we play next, so we are going to keep working on the changes necessary to become successful in January."
Michigan State will next play at the Notre Dame Invitational on October 10 in South Bend, Ind.
