Michigan State Concludes Day Two at Wildcat Invite

EVANSTON, Ill. -
Michigan State men's tennis advanced freshman Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) to the quarterfinals of singles play before falling in a tie-breaker later in the afternoon. MSU also continued consolation play in both singles and doubles with sophomore Clark Richardson (Leawood, Kan.) leading the team with a win. The Spartans will close out the Wildcat Invitational Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008 with play beginning at 8 a.m.
Hulewicz defeated Gentry Kaegi of Iowa with a 6-3, 6-2 record to advance on to quarterfinals where he competed against Marc Dwyer of host Northwestern University. He fell short of advancing in the tournament after a tie-breaking three set match against Dwyer with a 6-7, 6-4, (10-4) record. Richardson posted a win in singles play after defeating Trevor McGrath of Bradley University with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 record.
Junior Tyler Sauerbrey (Marshall, Mich.), classmate Jason Norville (Farmington Hills, Mich.), Richardson, sophomore Billy Gardner (Colombia Mo.) and senior Scott Rasmussen (Moraga, Calif.) all posted wins to continue on in singles consolation play, while the doubles team of Norville and Richardson also claimed a victory to advance further into consolation.
"The best way to look at it is that we won some and lost some," said head coach Gene Orlando. "We could have done better, but we're constantly improving and that's what needs to be done in order to succeed in the spring."
Michigan State will wrap up the Wildcat Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 28 in Evanston, Ill.
