Men's Tennis Completes First Day of Wildcat Fall Invitational

EVANSTON, Ill. -
Michigan State men's tennis came out strong in Friday singles play at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Northwestern. The matches will continue Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008.
Five of eight singles players and two of four doubles teams advanced to second round play on Saturday. Freshman Austin Brooks (Houston, Texas), classmate Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.), senior Scott Rasmussen (Moraga, Calif.), sophomore Billy Gardner (Columbia, Mo.) and junior Tyler Sauerbrey (Marshall, Mich.) will continue on in singles play. The doubles teams of Sauerbrey and John Stratton (Monroeville, N.J.), and Brooks and Gardner advanced to second round of doubles but fell short to advance on in the tournament.
In singles play, Rasmussen and Gardner both advanced to further play with straight set wins. Gardner tallied an impressive victory over Trevor McGrath of Bradley University with a 6-2, 6-0 score. Brooks, Sauerbrey and Hulewicz all advanced to play on Saturday with wins in tie-breaking third sets.
Both doubles teams of Sauerbrey and Stratton, and Brooks and Gardner defeated opponents in the first round with scores of 8-3 and 8-4 respectively.
"I see a lot of improvement from the first tournament to this second one," head coach Gene Orlando said. "There are a lot of good changes from then to now and there are some younger guys that got seeded in the top draw. They got some wins early on and it was very promising. We competed hard."
MSU will continue play at the Wildcat Fall Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 27 in Evanston, Ill.
