Men's Tennis Concludes Play at Hoosier Invite

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Michigan State finished the Hoosier Invite with top five finishes in both doubles and singles play. The doubles teams of Jason Norville (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and John Allare (Maineville, Ohio) and John Stratton(Monroeville, N.J.) and Austin Brooks (Houston, Texas) finished in the top five while on the singles side, junior Tyler Sauerbrey (Marshall, Mich.) and senior Alex Forger (Okemos, Mich.) also had top five finishes.
Norville and Allare finished fourth overall at the Hoosier Invite after falling in the semifinals on Saturday to Chris Herrlinger and Doug Matthews of Xavier. Stratton and Brooks won two straight matches including a 9-8 win over Robert Hall and Tim Barnoud of Louisville to finish fifth in the doubles bracket.
Sauerbrey finished third in the Singles Cream Flight posting a 3-1 record while Forger finished fourth in the Singles IU Flight, tallying a 3-1 record over the weekend.
Allare won the consolation Singles IU Flight after falling in the first round on Friday. Also falling in the first round on Friday, Forger and sophomore Clark Richardson (Leawood, Kan.) went on to win the following four straight matches in doubles play. Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) and Scott Rasmussen (Moraga, Calif.) fell to fellow Spartan teammates, Forger and Richardson, winners of the consolation doubles bracket, to finish third in consolation play.
Brooks won the consolation Crimson Flight defeating Stephen McLoughlin of Butler University in a three-set match. Richardson finished play in the Singles Crimson Flight with a 3-2 record and Stratton posted a 2-2 record in Singles Crimson Flight play.
Rasmussen finished with a 4-1 record in the Singles Cream Flight and both Hulewicz and Norville finished with a 2-2 record in the Singles Hoosier Flight.
"We finished on a strong note," said head coach Gene Orlando. "We were able to rebound from yesterday's results by bouncing back today with some wins. The guys were able to develop and improve their game and that is what the fall is all about."
The Spartans will travel to Evanston, Ill. for the Northwestern Invite on Friday Sept. 26.
