Men's Tennis Opens Play at Hoosier Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Michigan State men's tennis started the fall season at the Hoosier Invitational where both the singles and doubles were strong in opening-day action. The tournament continues Saturday morning at 8 a.m. with the third round of doubles competition.
Day one was highlighted by wins in seven of nine singles matches. Both John Stratton (Monroeville, N.J.) and Jason Norville (Farmington Hills, Mich.) had wins in singles and doubles.
In singles play, junior Tyler Sauerbrey (Marshall, Mich.) came from behind to defeat Mandela Shepard of Western Illinois University in three sets. Senior Alex Forger (Okemos, Mich.), classmate Scott Rasmussen (Maraga, Calif.) and freshman Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Ill.) all recorded 6-0 wins in their straight-set victories.
Norville posted an impressive 6-3, 6-4 win over Xavier Riart-Ferrer of Illinois State in the Hoosier Flight.
Both doubles teams of Stratton and Austin Brooks (Houston, Tex.) and Norville and John Allare (Mainville, Ohio) advanced to the quaterfinals with two victories in the afternoon.
"It was a good start to the season today," said head coach Gene Orlando. "We want the guys to gain confidence early, so we are off to a great start. We just need to keep on improving with each match over the next two days."
The Hoosier Invitational will continue all day Saturday and Sunday in Bloomington, Ind.
