EAST LANSING, Mich. - Four different Spartans had a pair of RBI and freshman Andrew Webb picked up his first career victory as the Michigan State baseball team defeated Toledo, 10-6, Wednesday afternoon at Kobs Field. Freshman Seth Williams homered for the Spartans, who tied their season-high with 14 hits. Sophomore Chris Roberts went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBI in the victory.
Juniors Kyle Day and Eric Roof each had two hits and a pair of RBI and freshman Brandon Eckerle added a 2-for-3 performance.
Trailing 5-2 early, MSU exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Steve Gerstenberger led off the inning with a single, and he scored on Roberts' double. The next batter, Day, laced a double to right to score two more runs to tie the game 5-5.
After Day moved to third on a passed ball, Eric Roof stroked a single through the right side to score Day and put MSU ahead 6-5. After a single by freshman Jeff Holm, Williams sent an RBI single through the right side of the Rocket infield to make it 7-5. A Gerstenberger sac fly would give MSU a three-run lead.
Michigan State (14-21) tacked on another pair of runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 10-5.
The middle innings belonged to Webb. The Allen Park, Mich., native, making his collegiate debut, allowed just one unearned run over four innings. He yielded three hits, walked two and struck out two. Freshman Tyler Newsome and Stephen Doty and senior Ryan MacFarlane each threw a scoreless inning of relief once Webb exited after the fifth inning.
Williams' solo homer came in the second inning, a towering shot to right field on an 0-2 pitch.
Toledo (12-24) struck four times in the top of the first, with all the runs coming on a Jared Hoying grand slam. Hoying finished 2-for-5 with four RBI on the day. Dan Sherwood also had two hits for the Rockets.
Michigan State will take on the Lansing Lugnuts Thursday, April 24 at Oldsmobile Park. The second annual Crosstown Showdown is set for a 6:05 p.m. start and will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.
