BRISTOL, Tenn. - The Michigan State women's tennis team traveled to Bristol, Tenn., on Saturday to take on the Charlotte 49ers at 9 a.m. MSU swept all three doubles matches with ease, then cruised to six-straight wins in singles. The Spartans looked dominant in the early morning outing, crushing Charlotte, 7-0.
MSU looked sharp in doubles play, losing a total of only six games, and sweeping the 49ers, 8-4, 8-2, 8-0. At No. 1 Christine Bader and Whitney Wilson downed Charlotte's Ana Spivakovsky and Koren Fleming, 8-4, while MSU's Ana Milosavljevic and Manon Noe defeated Candace Cunningham and Kimber Redfern, 8-2, at No. 2. In the third doubles flight, Lindsey Lonergan and Stephanie Kebler blanked the 49ers' Yana Stoeva and Gabi Vergara, 8-0.
The Spartans looked equally impressive as they carried their play into singles action. At No. 1, Bader took out Spivakovsky, 7-5, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Noe picked up her eighth win in dual-match play, and now sits at 8-3 after downing Fleming, 6-0, 6-2. MSU's Kebler defeated Redfern at No. 3, 7-5, 6-4, to extend her record to 7-2 in dual-match play on the season. At No. 4, Lonergan plowed through Yana Stoeva, 6-0, 6-0, while Milosavljevic picked up her 14th singles win of the year, beating Candace Cunningham at No. 5. At six singles, Ally Wickman completed the sweep for the Spartans, taking out Gabi Vergara 6-1, 6-2.
"Our doubles teams were really solid today, and I think that made a huge difference," said MSU head coach Erica Perkins. "We were getting a lot of touches on all three courts and the momentum carried over into singles. Christine Bader fought off a number of break points late in her first set, and played a smart and aggressive second set. Lindsey Lonergan also had a great day. She played some extremely focused tennis. I think it was a good day, but we have a tough match tomorrow against East Tennessee State and we will need to play high percentage, aggressive tennis on every court to get the win."
MSU returns to action tomorrow morning as they are entertained by East Tennessee State at 9 a.m. in Bristol.
