EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team fell to defending Big Ten champion Minnesota, 164-132, Saturday afternoon at McCaffree Pool in East Lansing, Mich. It was the Spartans' first meet of the season.
"I'm really, really pleased with how our girls competed," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "It will be interesting to see if we can carry that momentum on the road next week when we go to Illinois."
Sophomore Becca Ebner scored two first place finishes for the Spartans in both butterfly events. She touched the wall first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:04.50 and then later in the 100 fly with a time of 56.39.
As expected, the Spartans received two strong performances from senior Danielle Williams on the diving boards and both were good for first place. Williams scored a 286.58 on the three-meter board and a 288.52 on the one-meter board.
"Becca and Daniell were awesome today," said Gianiodis. "Our diving is great and Becca is just really swimming well."
Sasha Lewerenz was the other Spartan to post a first place finish in the pool, clocking a time of 58.27 in the 100 back.
Junior Laura DeFord also had a strong meet for the Spartans, swimming to a pair of third-place finishes in the 200 breast (2:24.39) and 200 IM (2:10.80). In her first collegiate meet, freshman Kerry Sodonis placed second in the 100 breast (1:06.12).
The Spartans closed out the afternoon with a win in the 200 free relay as the team of Erinn Wertz, Laura Leslie, Julie Kahn and Stephanie Fisher clocked a time of 1:36.76 MSU returns to action this Thursday and Friday (Oct. 16 and 17) when it travels to Illinois for a two-day dual meet.
