EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's women's golf team heads to Penn State looking to defend its title at the annual Lady Northern Invitational. The Lady Northern is held annually each fall at the course on which the Big Ten Championships will be held the following spring; this fall and spring, the Nittany Lions host both events at the Penn State Blue Course (72-par, 6.300 yards). Michigan State hosted the Lady Northern and Big Ten Championships last year at Forest Akers West, and the Spartans claimed both tournament titles.
Ten of the 11 Big Ten squads will be participating in this weekend's tournament, as well as four other non-Big Ten schools to fill out the field. Purdue, which was the NCAA runner-up last season, will be the only Big Ten team not making the trip this weekend. Other schools also participating in the Lady Northern are Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Toledo and Division II power Rollins, who has played in Penn State's Nittany Lion Invitational in the past, including last year.
For MSU, senior Sara Brown and sophomore Laura Kueny lead the Spartans to Penn State after carding impressive scores at MSU's Mary Fossum Invitational. Kueny shot a final-round 73 to finish with a three-round total of two-under par 214 (71-70-73), establishing a tournament record. For her efforts, Kueny was named Golfweek.com's Female Player of the Week. Meanwhile, Brown carded a three-day total of 222 (75-73-74) and led all golfers with 11 birdies over the three rounds.
In last year's Lady Northern, the champion Spartans recorded a two-day, 54-hole total of 889 (298-299-292), nine strokes better than runner-up Northwestern at 898 (300-299-299) at MSU's Forest Akers West.
This weekend will be 36 holes played on Saturday, with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Sunday will consist of 18 holes with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun.
