EAST LANSING, Mich. - The men's golf team completed play at the Gopher Invitational on Sunday, finishing in seventh place out of 12 teams.
MSU posted a 314 on Sunday to finish with a 903 (+39, 306-283-314), five strokes behind Southern Methodist Univeristy's 898 and six ahead of Big Ten rival Minnesota's 909.
The Spartans' second round total of 283 was the top score of the weekend, three strokes ahead of a 286 by the tournament's top team, Lamar University. Lamar won the tournament by an amazing 22 strokes over Arkansas with an 868 (+4, 290-286-292--868). They also had Casey Clendenon tie with Danny Zimmerman of Wisconsin with a one-under par (215) to share top individual honors.
Randy Hutchison was the best individual finisher for the Spartans with a five-over par (80-67-74--221) that tied him for 11th overall. His second round score of 67 was the second best total of the tournament.
"(Hutchison) realized that he was giving the course too much credit," said MSU head coach Sam Puryear, about his first round 80. "He made a slight adjustment on his swing after the first round, and played great the rest of the way."
Finishing tied for 26th were Jack Newman and Steve Cuzzort at +12, 228. Ryan Brehm finished one stroke behind at +13, 229. Grant Tungate finished with a +19, 235 for the Spartans.
"It was very windy and cold in the morning," explained Puryear about Sunday's conditions. "It made for some very difficult conditions for the guys. It also shows us that we have work to do, and it keeps us working toward our target."
The Spartans next compete at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala. on Sept. 24-25.
