EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team, ranked No. 15 in the latest GolfWorld/Nike Golf Division I Coaches' Poll, started the 2008 spring campaign with the Spartan Challenge, an 18-hole exhibition tournament against Grambling, Kent State and Tennessee State at the Wanamaker Course at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. on Sunday.
Sophomore Jack Newman topped the field with a two-under par 70, one stroke ahead of senior Ryan Brehm. Newman carded five birdies and only 25 putts during his opening spring round.
Newman and Brehm led the Spartans to the top spot among the four school field with a one-over par 289. Senior Nathan Gunthorpe and freshman Graham Baillargeon posted two-over par 74s, while junior Randy Hutchison rounded out the MSU competitors with a six-over 78.
The Spartans return to action with the Green and White on March 8 in Houston, Texas.
