EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's golf senior Ryan Brehm tied for the top spot at the Inverness Invitational in Toledo, Ohio after shooting a 73 on Tuesday for a tournament total of three-under par. The No. 30 Spartans started and finished the day in second place, posting an 868 (282-289-297) for a +13 total. The Seminoles were able to hang onto the top spot with a 294 on the day and an 862 three-round total, a new tournament record.
Brehm's total of 210 (70-67-73) set a tournament record, one that he now holds with Jonas Blixt (67-68-75) of Florida State. Brehm made up a two-stroke deficit on Tuesday against Blixt to capture a share of the title, as both men became the first to shoot under par at the event.
"(Brehm) stayed patient and played within himself," said Sam Puryear, completing his first tournament as the Spartans' head coach. "He trusted his shots and that paid dividends."
MSU junior Steve Cuzzort posted the best round of Tuesday with a 68, despite difficult conditions that included a cold, damp start to the morning and blustery conditions later in the day. His strong round on Tuesday moved him up from a tie for ninth after Monday's play, into a tie for third with a two-under score of 211 (70-73-68).
"(Cuzzort) had the best round of the day," said Puryear. "He has been working hard to prepare himself for the season."
Also competing for the second-place Spartans in the tournament were Randy Hutchison (+11, 71-77-76--224), Jack Newman (+13, 71-75-80--226) and Graham Baillargeon (+19, 76-74-82--232).
MSU finished ahead of 14 teams in the tournament, including seven teams ranked ahead of them in the Golf Week national rankings.
"It was a great way to start the season," acknowledged Puryear. "We showed a lot persistence and patience out there this weekend."
The men's golf team is back in action this weekend as they compete in the Gopher Invitational from Minneapolis, Minn. on Saturday and Sunday.
