
Women's Golfers Finish on Top in Summer Tournaments

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's women's golf team remains active and successful competing in several tournaments throughout the summer. Head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll and six student-athletes participated in two August tournaments, with champion and runner-up finishes from Spartans in both. Sophomore Laura Kueny (Whitehall, Mich.) won the 16th GAM Women's Championship Aug. 14, beating Slobodnik-Stoll by two strokes; incoming freshman Aimee Neff (Carmel, Ind.) placed second at the 2007 Ohio Women's Open Aug. 7.
Kueny shot a two-round 143 (71-72) at the Saginaw Country Club where she captured the GAM title exactly one month after claiming the 77th Trans National Golf Association Amateur Championship on July14. The rising sophomore bested Slobodnik-Stoll, who shot a 73-72--145, by two strokes as the Spartans claimed the champion and runner-up positions. Four other MSU golfers were entered in the challenging tournament and finished among the top 51 of the total 64 participants. Redshirt freshman Natalie Brehm (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) placed 14th, shooting a 156 (79-77) while redshirt sophomore Jen Domagalski (Okemos, Mich.) tied for 19th with her 158 (78-80) score. Additionally, redshirt freshman Sarah Nirenburg (West Bloomfield, Mich.) finished 43rd (81-85--166), and redshirt sophomore Ashley Dewling (Brighton, Mich.) tied for 51st (88-84--172).
At the 2007 Ohio Women's Open played in Defiance, Ohio, Neff whittled her day-two score down one stroke from the previous day (73-74--147) but was ultimately outshot by Ohio State alum and LPGA tour veteran Lisa Fernandes (74-72--146). The prestigious field included professional golfers such as Noriko Katazaki and Lorna Miedema; both tied for third overall.
The women's golf team returns to NCAA action hosting the Mary Fossum Invitational at the Forest Akers West Golf Course Aug. 8-9.
