East Lansing, Mich. - Its been a busy - and successful - few weeks for members of the Michigan State golf program. Not ones to rest on their laurels, members of the Big Ten Championship squad, including head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll, have been turning in some impressive performances both regionally and nationally.
Slobodnik-Stoll, the Big Ten Coach of the Year, captured her third consecutive Michigan Women's Mid-Amateur at Edgewood Country Club on June 12-13. The Detroit Free Press profiled the Spartan mentor in last week's newspaper.
Sara Brown, Jordyn Wells, and Aimee Neff all advanced to match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at the 6,094-yard Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Kentucky. Neff led the trio in stroke play, finishing 15th in the field with a 73-72--145 (+1). Brown was not far behind, with a 73-73--146 (+2), while Wells rebounded from a disappointing first-round 82 to post a one-under 71 on the second day of competition to finish +9 (83-71--154).
In match play, Wells fell, 4 and 3, to Marci Turner of Tennessee, while both Neff and Brown advanced to the round of 32. Neff downed Hawaii's Xyra Suyetsugu, 4 and 2, while Brown defeated Erico Moston of San Jose State, 1 up.
In the round of 32, Brown posted an impressive victory over Amanda Blumenherst, the No. 1 player from three-time national champion Duke, 3 and 2 to advance on to the round of eight. Brown fell to Eastern Michigan junior Stephany Fleet, 3 and 1; Fleet would advance to the finals in the event before falling, 4 and 3, to Mina Harigae of Monterey, Calif. Neff fell to Tiffany Joh of UCLA in the round of 32.
Rising sophomore Laura Kueny recently won the 86th Spring Lake Invitational Tournament, the oldest match play tournament in the country. She defeated six-time Michigan Women's Golf Association champion Joan Garety of Grand Rapids, 3 and 1 - and drew rave reviews from Garety in the process. The Grand Rapids Press provided coverage of the event..
