ATHENS, Ga. - Michigan State junior Nick Rinks dropped straight sets to Boise State's Luke Shields, 6-2, 6-1, at the 64-man NCAA Singles Championships in Athens, Ga.
"Nick never got a rhythm," head coach Gene Orlando said. "Luke is a really good player and Nick wasn't able to make the adjustments quick enough like he needed to. I know Nick wanted to do better, but it was nice to see him representing Michigan State at a national tournament."
Rinks was the only Spartan to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships and just the fourth in program history. He is the first since Alberto Brause reached the tournament in 1996.
