MADISON, Wis. - With third-place finishes from its top boats, the Michigan State rowing team captured fourth with 102 points at the Big Ten Championships in Madison, Wis., on Saturday. The Spartans had four of their five boats advance to the grand final following the morning heats, with the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four each capturing third at the day's end. Minnesota captured its first-ever team title with 150 points, while Michigan vaulted its way into second by winning the varsity eight (117), followed by Ohio State (103).
"It wasn't a bad day," Michigan State head coach Matt Weise said. "It was nice to see the varsity eight rebound, but the second varsity eight, the varsity four and the novice eight probably could have placed one or two spots higher. The problem is that when you get into championship mode you start thinking sideways. In the last 200 meters they started worrying about who was around instead of looking to go faster."
"Today was a nice step for us in that we performed well, but we can perform better. I can't wait for two weeks from now. We can still make a significant shift in speed, which is nice."
The Spartan novice eight finished first in its morning heat to earn a berth into the grand final. The crew of Vicky Grygar, Clare Adamus, Alex Maibusch, Dhanielle Tobias, Jessica Vandenberg Katie Hood, Megan Kursik, Amanda Dunnill, and Daryl Lederle posted a time of 6:34.3 to come away with a fourth-place finish, behind the winning boat from Minnesota (6:29.2), Wisconsin (6:30.9) and third place Iowa (6:33.3).
In the next race, the Michigan State second varsity four (Amanda Ruhno, Rachel Garabedian, Jenny Stanton, Kerry Dyer and Nicolette Clifford) captured second in the petite final to finish sixth overall. The Spartans rowed from start to finish in 7:36.1, ending the race behind Ohio State (7:13.6), but defeating the crew from Iowa (7:41.9).
Michigan State went on to capture third in the final three races of the day. The varsity four kicked things off, posting a time of 7:03.2. The Spartan boat of Allison Duffy, Catie Tyzo, Nancy Diehl, Victoria Woodard and Julie Ward was defeated by the winning crew from Minnesota (7:00.3) who jumped ahead early, and were narrowly defeated by the second-place boat from Ohio State (7:02.8).
Michigan State's second varsity eight of Tamara Yantovsky, Ashley Peach, Emily Regan, Sarah Kreft, Jenna Peters, Kate Taylor, Danica Bevan, Ashley Wenneman, and Lauren Gamble also took third, with a time of 6:13.8. Minnesota once against finished in first place behind a time of 6:09.1, followed by Ohio State (6:10.7). Michigan finished the race in fourth place with a time of 6:28.2).
Heading into the final race of the day, Michigan State sat in fourth place with 57 points, behind Minnesota (96 points), Ohio State (67) and Wisconsin (60). The varsity eight petitioned its way into the grand final after getting weeds caught under the boat in the morning heat, causing a near collision with Michigan, forcing MSU to slow down. The Spartan boat of Katie Bitz, Roz Bialczak, Joanna Brown, Erika Shaw, Michelle Mussett, Paula Thoms, Sarah Schmidt, and Kate Burdick proved that it belonged in the race, capturing third in the five-boat final.
In a surprising varsity eight race, No. 13 Michigan pulled out an upset, leading the event from start to finish, posting the winning time of 5:57.4. No. 8 Minnesota out-sprinted both Michigan State and Ohio State to take second with a time of 5:59.1, finishing just ahead of the No. 20-ranked boat from Michigan State (6:00.2). No. 3 Ohio State ended in fourth with a 6:01.7, while host Wisconsin rounded out the race in fifth with a time of 6:11.2.
Despite its third-place finish over Ohio State in the varsity eight, the Spartans were unable to move up in the team standings, as Minnesota held on for the championship with 150 points, followed by Michigan (117), Ohio State (103) and Michigan State (102). Host Wisconsin finished the day in fifth place (87), followed by Iowa (49) and Indiana (33) in sixth and seventh, respectively.
Michigan State will have a couple of weeks to regroup before heading to the South/Central Regional in Oakridge, Tenn., May 12-13.
