SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Spartan freshman Rochelle Robinson tallied a 38.400 in the all-around competition in the first preliminary session of the NCAA Championships on Thursday. The championships are being held at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on the campus of the University of Utah. Georgia won the team competition with a 197.700, followed by Florida in second with a 197.400 and Nebraska in third with a 196.625.
"It is always hard to come to the National Championships as an individual," Michigan State head coach Kathie Klages said. "Rochelle (Robinson) kept great focus and a very upbeat attitude throughout the entire competition and we are very proud of what she accomplished this season. Her experience at the Championships will keep her hungry to come back next year along with her teammates."
Robinson rotated with the top-ranked Florida Gators, beginning with a first-rotation bye. The Chesapeake, Va., native tallied a 9.750 on floor during the second rotation, and followed with her highest mark of the day, a 9.825 on vault during the third rotation.
After a fourth-rotation bye, Robinson worked through a near fall early in her bar routine during the fifth set, however she suffered a fall later in the routine to earn a 9.075 on the apparatus. She regrouped to finish the competition with a solid 9.750 on the balance beam and finish 22nd in the all-around with a 38.400.
The top three teams from each session will advance to the Super Six Competition on Friday at 9 p.m. EST. The top four individuals from each session in each event (plus ties) from the preliminary team and all-around competition will compete in the individual-event competition on Saturday at 9 p.m. EST. Robinson did not finish as one of the top four all-around competitors and will not advance to the individual event competition on Saturday.
