COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming & diving teams each finished the three-day Ohio State Invitational fifth in the team standings. The event, which concluded Sunday afternoon, featured 13 men's teams and 15 women's teams. Minnesota finished first in both the men's and women's competitions.
The women's team was led by sophomore Sasha Lewerenz, junior Julie Kahn and freshman Stephanie Fisher. Lewerenz clocked a 2:04.94 in the 200 back, good for a 13th-place finish, while Julie Kahn placed ninth in the 100 free (52.49). Fisher gave two strong performances, swimming to fourth place in the 200 back (2:02.95) and swimming the lead leg of the 400 free relay (3:30.24).
Freshmen Kevin Puskaric and L. Colby Ward, senior Adam Schmitt and sophomore Marcus Poteete were the top performers for the Spartan men. Puskaric placed fourth in the 200 breast (2:01.24) while Schmitt finished ninth in the 100 free with a time of 45.48. Poteete's 1:52.14 in the 200 fly was good for 12th place. Sophomore Ivan Zalessov was the only MSU diver in action on Sunday, placing 13th off the platform boards (237.60).
"I'm disappointed in our men's 400 free relay. We could've done better," head coach Matt Gianiodis said. "But overall, we did really well and had a lot more good performances than bad. Hopefully we can use this as momentum going into the next semester."
The Spartans will compete once more before the calendar year ends, traveling to Ball State Saturday, Dec. 8. The meet will start at 2 p.m.
