TULSA, Okla. - Michigan State's top doubles duo, seniors Nick Rinks and Adam Monich, won their first match of the season together, defeating the fourth-ranked doubles tandem in the country, 8-6, on Friday at the ITA All-American Invitational in Tulsa Okla.
Rinks and Monich, who were ranked No. 14 as a doubles combo by the ITA in the preseason, were scheduled to face Florida's Tyler Hockwalt and Greg Oulette, but the Gators withdrew due to injury.
After the withdrawal, Rinks and Monich advanced to face Texas' Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala, who are ranked fourth in the latest ITA doubles rankings. The Spartan doubles team prevailed, playing its best tennis of the early fall season.
"It was definitely a good win for us to have early in the season," head coach Gene Orlando said. "Adam is still recovering from his ankle injury, and he played his best tennis. As a doubles team, that was one of their best performances."
Rinks and Monich, playing in the consolation draw, advance to play Denver's Adam Holmstrom and Niklas Persson on Saturday in the doubles consolation semifinals.
