KENT, Ohio - An early second-half goal allowed Kent to take a 3-2 lead over the Michigan State field hockey team, and eventually gave the Golden Flashes a one goal victory over the Spartans. Michigan State senior captain Ashley Pernicano led the team scoring both, but an impressive 12 saves by Kent goalkeeper Linz Markwart allowed Kent to preserve the win.
Pernicano posted her first goal of the game at 20:50 to give MSU a 1-0 lead, but Kent answered right back with a goal by Elizabeth Lahey at 21:14, off an assist by Natalie Barreet. At 27:29, Pernicano found the back of the net again to give the Spartans their second lead of the day, but Lahey once again put one in for Kent to knot the score 2-2 at 32:39.
The game remained tied coming into the second period, but Kate Perry notched her fifth goal of the season at 36:28 to score the game-winner for Kent. After a 12-shot first period the Spartans managed just five shots in the second half.
Yuhasz posted six saves in the loss, that saw Kent come away with nine penalty corners compared to the five by MSU.
"Although we opened strong, we didn't play Spartan hockey today," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "Kent played with more heart and it led to our eventual loss. Next week against Penn State, we will need to find more skills in our heart and try again."
The Spartans will face the Nittany Lions next Saturday in East Lansing at 1 p.m.
