Champaign, Ill. - Sophomore Christine Bader was selected to the 2006 All-Big Ten First Team at conference championship banquet on April 27. Bader has been the Michigan State catalyst all season, playing exclusively out of the No. 1 singles and doubles positions for the Green and White. The Okemos, Mich., native boasts a 23-21 overall record during the spring season, including a 13-10 mark in singles play. Bader is the first Michigan State first-team selection since 1993.
Bader's play set the tone for the Spartan women, whose four conference wins quadrupled last season's win total of 1, throughout the season. Michigan State boasted a record of 11-2 when Bader netted a victory at No. 1 singles and was a perfect 10-0 when she won at No. 1 doubles, where she teamed with junior Sarah Andrews. Conversely, the Spartans were just 3-7 and 4-9 when Bader fell in her singles and doubles matches, respectively.
Bader is joined on the all-conference team by Illinois' Macall Harkins, Indiana's Sarah Batty, Iowa's Meg Racette, Michigan's Kara Delicata and Elizabeth Exon, Minnesota's Nischela Reddy, Northwestern's Cristelle Grier, Georgia Rose and Alexis Prousis, Purdue's Randi Schuler and Wisconsin's Caitlin Burke.
Andrews was also honored by the Big Ten. Andrews was named as Michigan State's Sportsmanship Award Honoree.
Bader and Andrews paced the Spartans to a 14-10 overall record this season, including a 4-6 mark in conference play. Michigan State's season came to a pre-mature end on Thursday, April 27, with a 4-0 loss to Wisconsin, in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, at the University of Illinois.
