CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Michigan State Spartans' women's tennis team was upset today in the Big Ten Championships by No. 11 seed Wisconsin, by a score of 4-0. The Spartans finish their season with a 14-10 mark and a Big Ten record of 4-7, with two Big Ten losses coming to the Badgers. The Badgers will move on to face Michigan tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Wisconsin took the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches to take the doubles point to start the match. Sophomore tandem Morgan Tuttle and Chelsea Nusslock up ended MSU's No. 2 doubles paring of Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) and Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.), 8-4. The No. 3 doubles match saw Michigan State's freshmen combo of Ana Milosavljevic (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Marianne Eelens (Noord, Aruba) take on freshman Erin Jobe and junior Kaylan Caiati. Eelens and Milosavljevic fell to Caiati and Jobe by a score of 8-3, giving the Badgers the double point.
The No.1 doubles match was abandoned after Wisconsin sealed the doubles point with MSU's Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) and Sarah Andrews leading Wisconsin's Caitlin Burke and Elizabeth Carpenter, 6-4.
The Badgers began singles play taking the first three matches that finished, giving them the 4-0 victory. At the No. 1 singles spot, Bader fell to No. 34 Burke, 7-5, 6-0. At the No. 4 spot, junior Andrews lost in straight sets to Carpenter, 6-3, 6-2. The third and final singles match that the Badgers took saw freshman Milosavljevic playing in the No. 5 spot. Milosavljevic fell to Tuttle, 6-1, 6-2.
The No. 2, 3 and 6 singles matches were abandoned after the Badgers had sealed the win. At the time, junior Baron was down a set to Kaylan Caitai in the No. 2 match, as was Eelens in the No. 6 singles match. In the No. 3 spot, Kebler took her first set, 6-4, but fell in the second set, 6-1. When play was stopped, Caitai held a 3-0 lead in the third set.
Michigan State was without junior Pascale Schnitzer's services, due to an ankle injury she suffered at practice yesterday.
"I'm really proud of these girls," said interim coach Brett Page. "They fought really hard and had one of the best Big Ten seasons here at Michigan State in a while. We're not loosing anyone next year and should be a force to be reckoned with."
