Spartan Tumblers Take Second At Annual State Of Michigan Classic

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - The Michigan State gymnastics squad competed at the prestigious State of Michigan Classic Friday night in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., where Michigan took its ninth consecutive victory at the meet with an overall score of 196.375. Michigan State captured second place in the event with a 193.525, followed by Central Michigan in third place scoring a 192.425, Western Michigan in fourth with a 192.300 and Eastern Michigan rounding out the field with a 191.800 for the night.
MSU's night was highlighted with season-best performances in the all-around competition by both Kristen Coleman and Katlyn Roggensack, who scored 39.225 and 38.775 respectively. Coleman's 9.775 on the balance beam tied her for first on the event, while her all-around score placed her third in the competition.
Victoria Iakounina tied a season-high with a 9.700 on the uneven bars, while she narrowly missed a season-best mark on the balance beam scoring a 9.725 for MSU. Competing on the vault and floor exercise for the first time in 2005, Briana Dicus scored 9.8 and 9.65 respectively, for the events.
"We are very excited about the direction the program is going with our younger girls stepping up and performing to their potential. We are constantly stressing the importance of performing how you practice to our team, and tonight was a great example of that," Spartan head coach Kathie Klages said.
Individually for the Green and White, freshman Dani Fanning kicked off the Spartan floor exercise rotation with a stellar 9.775 for the event, while Bethany Little's 9.85 on the vault was good enough for a third place finish.
The Spartan gymnastics team continues action Feb. 10 when they travel to Mid-American Conference foe Ball State in Muncie, Ind. for a 7 p.m. match-up vs. the Cardinals and Bowling Green.
