EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's swimming and diving fell to conference opponent Ohio State, 153-90, on Saturday. Michigan State's Heather Kiluk and Sasha Lewerenz were the only Spartans to collect first-place finishes, allowing the Buckeyes to come away victorious in 11 events.
"I thought the girls swam well, under the conditions," said Michigan State associate head coach Kathleen Milloy. "We traveled back after last night's meet against Notre Dame and then put forth our best effort this morning."
OSU took an early lead with a win in the 200 medley relay, but the MSU "A" and "B" relay teams placed second and third, respectively, to limit the Ohio State lead after the first event.
In the 1000 freestyle, MSU sophomore Marlys Fuqua took third with a time of 10:37.37, but Ohio State had strong performances by Farriss Blaskovits and Haley Mitchell to collect first and second places.
The Buckeyes went on to win the 200 freestyle, with Griet Buelens finishing in 1:52.59; MSU's Mara Loniewski took second (1:55.61), narrowly out touching Annie Rennebohm of Ohio State (1:55.98).
The Spartans battled back with second and third-place finishes in the 50 freestyle. MSU sophomore Betsy DeJonge turned in a time of 25.10 to take second, followed closely by teammate Eve Brusie (25.12). Elaine Chan took first for Ohio State with a time of 24.20.
MSU continued to fight in the 200 IM, with MSU varsity record-holder Kiluk capturing the Spartans' first win of the day with a time of 2:09.33. Freshman Sasha Lewerenz took third in the event (2:10.60).
In the 100 freestyle, Ohio State pulled out another victory, Rennebohm finished in 53.86; MSU's Julie Kahn grabbed second (54.25) and Erinn Wertz took third (54.36) to round out the top three.
In the 200 butterfly, OSU All-American Gulsah Gunenc captured another win for the Buckeyes, hitting the wall at 2:05.17. She was followed by teammate Courtney Brayman (2:11.40) and MSU's Amber Schroeder (2:13.44).
Lewerenz collected her fourth win this season in the 200 backstroke finishing with a time of 2:04.01 to easily defeat Jill Lockhart of OSU (2:07.26). Carly Zenk placed third with a time of 2:10.74.
Loniewski took second for the second time of the day in the 500 freestyle (5:09.92).
With injuries nagging the MSU divers, the Buckeyes were able to sweep the three-meter board, and capture the top two spots on the one meter. Katie Edwards was the only Spartan to crack the top three, placing third on the one meter with a score of 247.80.
The Buckeyes swept the 200 breaststroke and claimed victory in the 400 freestyle relay to end the day with their second Big Ten win of the season. The Spartans fall to 2-4, 1-3 in the Big Ten.
MSU will continue action next weekend at the Northwestern Invitational, Nov. 17-19 in Evanston, Ill.
