EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams will take to the water against Iowa on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Charles McCaffree pool in the IM West Building. The meet will mark the first dual of the season for the men's squad, while the women will close out their four-meet homestand.
The Spartan Squads
The women have posted 1-2 (0-2 Big Ten) record to start the season after facing tough opponents in Akron, Illinois and Michigan in their first three meets. Several Spartans came away with multiple wins in individual events over the past week, including Katie Edwards, Marlys Fuqua, Sasha Lewerenz, and Mara Loniewski.
On the men's side, the team will be led by a group of eight juniors and seniors; they will welcome 10 freshmen for their first collegiate meet against Iowa. The MSU men will look to improve upon their 4-4 record in dual competition from one year ago.
The Last Time
Last year in Iowa City the Hawkeyes captured wins against the Spartans as the men finished with a final score of 180.5-117.5, while the women were also successful (174-120).
The University of Iowa
The Iowa Hawkeyes come into the weekend with both the men and women holding a 1-2 (0-2 Big Ten) record, after both the men's and women's squads fell to No. 10 Minnesota last week. Frank Van Dijkhuizen captured first on the one-meter board against the Gophers, while for the women the only win came from freshman Laura Mozden in the 100-yard butterfly. Modzen also finished third in the 200 IM and fourth in the 200 butterfly. Second-place finishes for the Hawkeyes came from Dragos Agache in the 100 (57.10) and 200 (2:06.91) breastroke, and Ashley Dell in the 500 freestyle (5:03.23).
