EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team turned in some great performances, but was unable to come away with a victory against Illinois on Saturday, falling 166-134 to the Illini. The divers continued to live up to their potential with one-two-three sweeps on the one-and three-meter boards, while freshman swimmer Sasha Lewerenz also carried her momentum from yesterday into the meet.
Katie Edwards took first on both the one-meter (295.50) and three-meter (334.50) to sweep in both events for the weekend, and three of the four scores for the weekend qualified Edwards for the NCAA Regional meet. In addition, her score of 334.50 on the three-meter board set a personal best.
Amy Schmidt took second in the one-meter (280.80) and third in three-meter (292.57). Allison Sayers took second on the three-meter (292.57), while Alycia Mokedanz placed third on the one-meter (278.54). The trio also posted qualifying scores for the NCAA regional meet.
Lewerenz posted wins in the 100 backstroke (57.14) and 200 backstroke (2:03.38), with teammates Carly Zenk and Heather Kiluk taking second in those events, respectively.
Other first-places finishes were turned in by Marlys Fuqua in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:33.52, and Mara Loniewski in the 500 freestyle (5:05.29).
"We had some good swims today, but losing the first relay of the meet was tough," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Illinois swam really well, but it was great to see our divers qualify for regionals. Were in the middle of our home stretch now, so it will be good to see what we can do against a top team like Michigan."
The Spartans will continue their four-meet homestand against Michigan on Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. and Iowa on Oct. 28 at 12 p.m.
