EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Spartan gymnastics team opened the 2006 campaign vs. the nationally-ranked Kentucky Wildcats Friday night at Jenison Field House. For the event, UK captured the 192.775 to 189.225 victory to improve to 1-0, while MSU falls to 0-1 in early season competition. Freshman Katlyn Roggensack led State in the all-around scoring with a 38.575, a second place overall finish in the season-opening competition.
The Spartans started strong on the vault where Chayla Hill recorded a 9.800 and Sarah Alexander and Roggensack added scores of 9.625 and 9.525 respectively for the event. State then moved to the uneven bars, where Kristen Coleman captured the individual crown scoring a blistering 9.825 for the Green and White. Kentucky's Lucy Burgin and Krystle Cook tied for second with a score of 9.800.
MSU would compete on the balance beam for the third rotation of the night, where Victoria Iakounina would tally State's highest result with a 9.800 third place finish. Roggensack would follow in fifth place with a 9.775 mark. Needing a strong fourth rotation, Hill would take first place with a 9.800 followed by UK's Heather Hite in second with a 9.700 mark for the event.
"We have a lot of work to do, but I am very excited about our potential," Spartan head coach Kathie Klages said. "Katlyn (Roggensack) stepped up big in her first meet as a Spartan and we benefited from a strong home opening crowd."
MSU returns to action Jan. 14 when its hosts Pittsburgh and in-state rival Western Michigan in a 1 p.m. contest at Jenison Field House.
