West Lafayette, Ind. - The Michigan State women's soccer team dropped a 5-1 decision to host Purdue University on Friday, Sept. 30. The Green and White now stand 5-3-3, 1-1-0 in Big Ten Play. Boilermaker Lauren Sessleman scored a pair of first half goals and added two assists as Purdue improved to 6-5-0 (2-1-0) in 2005. Junior midfielder Maureen Pawlak (Novi, Mich.) scored the only goal for the Spartans, who were out shot 14-9 by the Boilermakers.
Sessleman got Purdue on the board early, beating MSU goalkeeper Nicole Galas (Sterling Heights, Mich.) in the 11th minute. Sessleman pushed the Boilermaker lead to 2-0 when her header, off of a direct kick, eluded the sophomore Galas.
The Spartans cut the deficit in half, when Pawlak scored just four minutes into the second half, when senior forward Erin Konheim (West Bloomfield, Mich.) found her off of a direct kick, just outside of the Purdue 18-yard box. The Boilermakers struck back four minutes later, with their first of three goals in seven minutes, to put the game out of reach.
Sessleman assisted on Purdue goals three and four, scored by forwards Parrissa Eyorokon and Jessica Okoroafo, respectively. Sophomore midfielder Jill Sarbaugh capped the scoring with an unassisted goal in the sixtieth minute.
Boilermaker goalkeeper Lauren Mason was forced to make just two saves, in earning her sixth win of the season. Galas made two saves for Michigan State, before giving way to freshman Lindsay Wrege (Portage, Mich.) who made one stop in 29 minutes.
The Spartans, who had allowed just five goals all season, prior to Friday's game, will look to get back on track when they travel to Indiana on Sunday, Oct. 2.
