EAST LANSING, Mich. - -
Senior forward Emma Harris (Portage, Mich.) scored a pair of goals as the MSU women's soccer team cruised past visiting Toledo, 4-0, Sunday afternoon. The Green and White upped their record to 3-1-2, while the Rockets slipped to 3-2-0 for the season. Harris put the Spartans on top early when she took a through ball from junior Jenee Witherspoon (Midland, Mich.) and beat UT goalkeeper Jen Whipple with a low shot into the far corner in the seventh minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Galas (Sterling Heights, Mich.) collected her fourth consecutive shutout. At halftime, the Spartans celebrated the 20th season of varsity soccer by honoring the program's alumni.
"It was a great effort today," said head coach Tom Saxton. "Toledo is a good team but we were ready today. Now we need to put together that type of effort on a consistent basis."
Harris picked up her first assist of the season when she combined with senior forward Dana Voorheis (Saginaw, Mich.) to set up classmate Erin Konheim (West Bloomfield, Mich.). Konheim beat her defender, one on one, and bent a shot just inside the far post for her first goal of the season.
The Spartans pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 21st minute, when Witherspoon's shot ricocheted off of Whipple and ended up on Harris' feet just outside the six-yard box. The three-goal, first-half outburst matched Michigan State's total production over the first five contests of 2005.
Senior forward Shannon Collar (Plano, Texas) capped the scoring with a goal midway through the second half. Witherspoon picked up her third assist of the day, when she slotted a ball between two defenders to set up Collar.
The Spartan defense, led by sophomore Erin Doan (Dearborn, Mich.), limited Toledo to just four shots and one corner kick for the game.
"I'm really proud of the girls," Doan said. "It was a complete 180 from Friday, we worked hard and did our jobs today."
