2005 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball -- Minneapolis Second Round

No. 1 Michigan State 61, No. 8 Southern California 59 -- Postgame Notes -- This is the third meeting in the all-time series between Michigan State and Southern California and the first in NCAA tournament play. USC won both previous meetings in the series - a 56-51 win on Jan. 3, 1992 at Michigan State and a 66-50 win on Dec. 30, 1993 in Los Angeles (USC Christmas Challenge Tournament). The win was MSU's first over USC.
-- This is Michigan State's sixth NCAA tournament appearance and its third straight. MSU is now 5-5 all-time in NCAA play. This is MSU's first NCAA appearance as a No. 1 seed. Michigan State advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen" for the first time in school history, breaking a four-game jinx in second-round NCAA games.
-- MSU has now won 14 straight games and 18 of its last 19. MSU has now reached the 30-win mark for the first time in school history; it has had six seasons in school history with at least 20 wins.
-- Southern California is making is 14th all-time appearance in the NCAA tournament and its first since the 1996-97 season. Southern California is now 28-12 all-time in NCAA tournament play. USC is now 4-2 all-time in second-round games. It is the first time that USC has faced a Big Ten team in NCAA tournament play.
-- USC finishes its season at 20-11, reaching the 20-win plateau for the first time since the 1996-97 season.
-- It is the 24th time this season Michigan State has used the starting lineup of Bowen, Haynie, Lucas-Perry, Roehrig and Shimek; MSU is now 22-2 in those games.
-- Southern California used its starting lineup of Gipson, Woodward, Murphy, Gnekow and LeNoir for just the second time this season, and the second straight game. It's the Women of Troy's 10th different starting lineup this season.
-- MSU head coach Joanne P. McCallie is now 5-0 in games played at Williams Arena. MSU is now 17-7 all-time in games played in Minnesota (15-5 vs. Minnesota, 2-0 in NCAA play, 0-2 in 1977 AIAW championships played at Minnesota).
-- MSU used first-half runs of 8-2 and 8-0 to build its biggest lead of the first half, 29-21 with 2:04 left. USC was held scoreless for a 5:50 margin during the 8-0 Spartan run late in the first half.
-- Michigan State led 29-25 at halftime, outrebounding USC by a 18-17 margin in the first half. MSU hit 45.8 percent (11-of-24) from the field in the first half, compared to 34.4 percent (11-of-32) for USC.
-- There were four ties and four lead changes in the first half; and nine ties and nine lead changes in the second half.
-- MSU is now 27-1 when leading at halftime; USC is now 3-5 when trailing at the half this season.
-- USC has scored 25 points at the half on five different occasions this season.
-- MSU is 20-1 when allowing under 30 points in the first half this season; USC is 5-7 when scoring under 30 points in the first half.
-- USC's Camille LeNoir scored nine of the Women of Troy's first 11 points in the second half, as USC took a 36-33 lead with 15:53 remaining in regulation.
-- Neither team led by more than six points in the second half.
-- MSU's Lindsay Bowen scored 10 of her team's last 12 points in the contest over the final 3:34 of play, including two three-pointers with under two minutes left. Rene Haynes scored off a scramble with 2.9 seconds left to give the Spartans the two-point margin of victory.
-- MSU was outrebounded for only the fifth time this season, but for the third time in its last five games (3-2 on the season).
-- MSU is 27-1 when scoring more than 60 points and 20-0 when holding its opponents under 60 points.
-- MSU's Lindsay Bowen now has 216 three-pointers in her career, two shy of the school record of 218 set by Maxann Reese (1996-2000). Bowen now has 73 three-pointers this season, just four away from tying her single-season school record (2002-03) of 77.
-- Bowen led the team in scoring for the 10th time this season, with 19 points. She now has 1,260 career points. She scored in double figures for the 26th time this season (71st time in her career) and 17th time in her last 20 games.
-- MSU's Kristin Haynie set a new single-season record for steals with her three-steal performance. She now has 105 steals this season, breaking the old mark of 103 set by Marline Ferguson in 1991-92. She now has 160 assists this season. Haynie holds the school career records with 545 assists and 334 steals.
-- MSU's Kelli Roehrig now has eight straight double-figure scoring games, 27 this season and 71 in her career.
-- MSU's Liz Shimek now has 813 rebounds in her career, sixth-best in school history. She is in 11th place in school history in scoring with 1,140 career points.
-- Shimek has now had four straight double-figure scoring games (13 of her last 15 games).
-- It is the 18th time Michigan State has had at least four players score in double figures this season.
-- USC's Kim Gipson scored in double figures for the 10th time this season (USC is 7-3 when she scores in double figures), while teammate Camille LeNoir scored in double figures for her 14th time this season (9-5) and fourth time in her last five games. Eshaya Murphy scored in double figures for the 13th time this season (5-8).
-- It's the 27th time this season that USC's Brynn Cameron has made at least one 3-pointer; USC is 19-8 when she hits from outside. It is also the 21st time this season that Cameron has hit at least two 3-pointers; USC is now 15-6.
-- Cameron now has 72 three-pointers on the season, moving into ninth place with Loree Payne of Washington (2002) in the Pac-10's single-season 3-pointer record book; the record is 92 by Lisa Griffith of Arizona in 1997.
-- It is the 24th time this season that USC has had 15 or more offensive rebounds in a game (16-8), its second game in a row and fourth in its last five contests (eighth game in its last 11). USC ended up with 17 offensive rebounds.
-- It's the fifth time that Camille LeNoir has led USC in scoring. USC is now 3-2 when that occurs.
