Spartans Fall In First Dual Meet

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's men's and women's swimming and diving teams were topped in their first dual meet of the season on Friday, Nov. 4, in West Lafayette, Ind. The men return to action hosting Notre Dame on Friday, Nov. 11 at 5 p.m. The women do not see action again until the Ohio State Invitational on Dec. 2.
Sophomore Adam Schmitt had a strong showing at the meet, finishing second in the 50 yard freestyle (21.12) and in the 100 yard free (46.36). Schmitt was also a member of the second place finishing 400 yard medley team, joined by seniors Rudy Wagenaar, Ian Clutten and James Steele with a time of 52.38.
In the 100 yard breaststroke, Clutten took third (57.01) while finishing fourth in the 200 breast (2:04.97). Other fourth place finishes were Wagenaar in the 100 yard backstroke (52.38) and senior Matt Wisniewski in the 50 free (21.34).
For the women, junior Amy Schmidt performed well on the boards, taking second in the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 259.35. Freshman Alycia Mokedanz finished fourth in the event, scoring 259.35. In the 3-meter competition, junior Katie Edwards took fourth with a final tally of 287.00.
In the lanes, senior Rachael Hagerman finished second in the 50 free (23.70) while senior Katrina Kniff took fourth (24.32.) Hagerman also had a fourth place finish in the 100 yard free (52.93).
The 14th ranked Boilermaker men beat the Spartans, 237-63, while the 19th ranked women took down the Green and White, 235-65. The 13th ranked Northwestern men won over MSU, 205-91, and the Wildcat women won with a score of 197-103.
