
Spartans Complete First Day Of OSU Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed day one of the Ohio State Invitational, in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday, Dec. 2. With two days left, the women have tallied a score of 117, placing third, while the men have earned 113 points, placing fifth. The invitational features 12 universities, including six men's swimming teams, seven women's swimming teams and a total of 12 diving teams. On each side, four of the attending teams are ranked in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll.
"It was a pretty good session," commented head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We seem to be holding our own against an awful lot of Big Ten teams. I am pretty happy with the way things are going and we are definately improving, especially the women."
On the women's side, the 200 free relay 'A' team of Rachael Hagerman, Eve Brusie, Julie Kahn and Katrina Kniff took third with a time of 1:35.03, while the 'B' team of Marsena Vranesic, Carly Zenk, Whitney Field, and Lindsay Rodin finished 10th (1:37.44).
The MSU 'A' team of Zenk, Courtney Ellabarger, Hagerman and Kniff also took third in the 400 medley relay, touching at 3:51.13. The 'C' team of Dani Sawyer, Alison Johnson, Megan Reponen and Mandy Wyman finished 14th in the event (4:03.89).
Individually, Hagerman finished fifth in the 50 free (23.63), while Kniff placed eighth (24.21) and Kahn came in 16th (24.31). Heather Kiluk swam to a 12th place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.97.
In the diving portion of the meet, all five Michigan State divers placed in the top-16 on the three-meter board, with Danielle Williams leading the way, capturing sixth place with a final score of 282.10.
For the men, the 200 free medley 'A' team of Matt Wisniewski, Adam Schmitt, Rudolf Wagenaar and Nick Harley placed fourth (1:21.94) and the 'B' team of David Lessard, John Henry Berg, Mark Rogers and Johan Sunryd placed 11th (1:25.96). In the 400 medley, Wagenaar, Ian Clutten, Harley and Schmitt finished fourth (3:19.07).
Individually, Krzysztof Olszewski swam to fifth place in the 500 free (4:35.10) and Wisniewski took eighth in the 50 free (20.93), while Schmitt finished 14th (20.99). In the 200 IM, David Habel finished 15th, touching at 1:55.59. The meet resumes tomorrow, with individual preliminaries in the morning and finals in the afternoon.
