Men's Swimming and Diving Falls to No. 4 Michigan

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's swimming and diving team were topped by No. 4 Michigan Friday night in Ann Arbor, 152-83. Seniors Rudy Wagenaar and Ian Clutten captured individual titles with Wagenaar taking the 100 back (51.39) and Clutten claiming the 100 breast (56.05). Both the Spartan men and women return to action at the Ohio State Invitational on Dec. 2.
"I felt good about winning a couple of events with Ian (Clutten) and Rudy (Wagenaar)," head coach Matt Gianiodis stated. "I was happy with our relays too, they did a good job considering how good they (Michigan) are."
Sophomore tandem Adam Schmitt and Matt McNichols teamed up with seniors David Habel and Matt Wiseniewski to take first place in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:06.15. The foursome of Schmitt, Wagenaar, Clutten and senior Nick Harley also had a good showing, finishing second in the 400 medley relay (3:21.79).
The Spartans got third place finishes from Schmitt in the 50 free (20.98), Wagenaar in the 200 free (1:42.37) and senior David Lessard in the 100 free (47.86). Freshman Krzysztof Olszewski also had a third place finish in the 1650 free (15:47.92).
"I have to give a lot of credit to Kris (Olszewski), he did a really nice job," Gianiodis commented. "Even though he was disqualified in the 400 IM, I thought Habel came back and did a good job on the relays."
In the diving events, sophomore Tylor Fick was the top Spartan of the day, finishing with second and third place finishes. In the one-meter board, Fick took second with a score of 279.97. In the three-meter competition, Fick placed third tallying 268.35.
