Men's Tennis Concludes Action at the Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team concluded play at the Spartan Invitational on Sunday Oct. 9. The Spartans faced Western Michigan and won two out of three doubles matches along with the No. 1 and 2 singles matches.
The Spartans were led by sophomores Nick Rinks (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Adam Monich (Ann Arbor, Mich.). Rinks defeated Tim Bradshaw 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, while Monich beat Jose Orozco in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Rinks and Monich were both 3-0 on the weekend in singles action and teamed together to go 4-0 in doubles play.
Juniors Michael Flowers (Memphis, Tenn.) and Joseph McWilliams (Aurora, Ill.) earned the Spartans' other doubles victory, beating Brady Crosby and Jeff French 8-4, but both fell in singles matches to post a 2-1 singles mark for the tournament.
Freshman Alex Forger (Okemos, Mich.) also notched a 2-1 singles mark this weekend after falling to Brady Crosby 6-2, 6-1 on Sunday. MSU's other two freshmen, John Allare (Mainville, Ohio) and Scott Rasmussen (Morga, Calif.), teamed together for the Spartans' third doubles match, losing 8-6 to Kevin Hayward and Orozco. In singles action, Rasmussen fell to Alejando Staub 7-5, 6-1 while Allare lost in three sets to Jeff French.
"We're continuing to improve and get better," said Coach Gene Orlando. "It's been great to see the steady improvement and we've made some steady progress. We still have two more events to play this fall and we're just hoping to get better with each one."
The Spartans will continue the fall season with the ITA Midwest Regional at Ann Arbor, Mich., on Oct. 20.
