Men's Golf Climbs Leaderboard, Finishes Seventh At Landfall Tradition

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Freshman Randy Hutchison (Traverse City, Mich.) fired a final-round 69 and notched his first career top-five finish at The Landfall Tradition, finishing in a tie for fifth with a 1-over-par 76-72-69 - 217 total. Hutchison's 3-under-par 69 is a career-low round, besting his previous low of 72.
Michigan State rebounded from its ninth-place position after 36 holes, carding a final-round 290 to move two places up the leaderboard. The Spartans finished at 300-301-290 - 891 for a seventh-place finish and only two shots shy of a tie for third.
Second-round leader Texas A&M ran away with the tournament, recording a 7-under-par 281 in the final round, giving the Aggies a 294-295-281 - 870 total and 10-shot victory over Coastal Carolina (295-297-288 - 880). Four teams finished in a tie for third with 889 totals: Tulsa (289-302-298), Illinois (299-298-292), Minnesota (296-297-296), and Virginia Commonwealth (297-298-294).
Sophomore Ryan Brehm (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) earned his third top 20 of the season, finishing in a tie for 15th with a 77-73-72 - 222 total. With last week's second-place finish at the Duke Classic, Brehm closed the fall season with back-to-back top-20 finishes.
Freshman Grant Tungate (East Lansing, Mich.) carded a final-round 74, giving him a 76-77-74 - 227 total in his third tournament of the season. His 227 total was good for a tie for 30th, his best placing in his career.
Sophomore Brandon Cigna (Novi, Mich.), also playing in his third event of the year, finished in 47th with a 71-79-82 - 232 total. Junior Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) rounded out the Spartan lineup, rebounding with a final-round 75. Harmon finished in 54th with an 82-81-75 - 238 total, his highest 54-hole score in his collegiate career.
The Spartans close their five-tournament fall schedule with four top-10 finishes, including a third-place showing at the prestigious Topy Cup held in Tokyo, Japan. Michigan State resumes its 2005-06 season on Feb. 4, 2006, at The Green and The White alumni scrimmage in Houston.
