EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams picked up victories over Grand Valley State at the Charles McCaffree Pool in the IM West Building this past weekend, in their 2005-06 season opener. The men's team won with a score of 152-82, while the women took the meet with a 145-71 score. Both the Spartan men and women took first place in every single event against the Division II opponent.
"I thought some kids swam really well," head coach Matt Gianiodis said. "I was impressed by some of the freshman and there were some upperclassmen who swam well too. I was really impressed by the divers, they had people qualify for regionals again."
"Obviously the competition is going to get a lot tougher, but it was a nice place to start," Gianiodis commented. "We came out of the shoot last year, especially with the women, swimming really well and it didn't seem like we improved that much. We'll see what happens when we get some pressure from some better competition, we go on the road to Michigan next week, but it was a nice place to start."
The Spartan women travel to Ann Arbor on Friday, Oct. 28, to face Michigan at 6 p.m. The men will return to action on Friday, Nov. 4, with a dual meet against Purdue and Northwestern in West, Lafayette, Ind.
