EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team won its first match of the 2005 regular season Saturday, Jan. 29, against Bowling Green (2-1) in a 7-0 deciding score. The Spartans (1-2) will face Detroit Mercy (1-0) later tonight at 6 p.m.
The Spartans took an early lead by clinching the doubles point as senior Keri Thompson (Clark Lake, Mich.) and freshman Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) defeated Ashley Jackupcin and Jenna Nussbaum, 8-2, at the No. 2 doubles spot. The No. 3 doubles also saw success as sophomore Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) and senior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.) defeated Andrea Meister and Andrea Volle, 8-5.
In singles, MSU dominated the court, winning all six matches en route to the shutout. At the No. 1 spot Thompason defeated Susie Schoenberger, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2, Bader saw her first singles victory as a Spartan as she defeated Jacupcin, 6-2, 6-4. The No. 3 match was captured by Schnitzer as she dominated Yolle, 6-1, 6-0. Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) defeated Nussbaum, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 4 spot. At the No. 5 spot Baron defeated Cameron Benjamin by a score of 6-1, 6-1. At the No. 6 spot sophomore Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) dropped her first set against BGSU's Meister, but returned with a 6-0, 6-2 comeback in the next two sets.
Coach's Comments: "I think it's great to get your first win at home. We played well against Vanderbilt and Virginia, it didn't show in the score, but it was able to be shown today," said head coach Tim Bauer. "We beat Bowling Green soundly, and our team showed that what we work on in practice is paying off in our matches. I think Christine Bader's first win at home was big for her, especially as a freshman. She had a big crowd here for her today since she's a hometown girl. Keri Thompson also put in a sound performance as well as Jessica Baron. Baron won very easily which showed a sign of maturity. Sara Andrews was under the weather but still pulled out a three-set win. All around we had some positive things happen today. Even though we won 7-0, we still have a lot to work on to reach our goals for this year. To me it was a good first step. I expect us to be a lot better a few matches from now, but it was a great first win today. We hope to be 2-2 overall by the end of the day today."
