HARRISONBURG, Va. - Michigan State field hockey (3-0) extended its winning streak to three victories after defeating James Madison (0-3), 6-1, in Harrisonburg, Va., on Saturday, Sept. 4. Standout junior Veerle Goudswaard, who transferred to MSU from JMU in 2003, scored four of the Green and White's six goals. "Being away from home, we struggled early on," said MSU head coach Michele Madison. "But 18 minutes into the first half, we settled in and scored our first goal. From that moment on, we dominated. What a fantastic game." Goudswaard scored two goals in the first half, which came from a pair of penalty corners, both from juniors Breanna Harpstead and Jessica Miller. "Goudswaard was unbelievable today," said Madison. "She really performed well today and Annebet (Beerman) was strong behind her, assisting in her goals." MSU freshman Michelle Ciliberti capped the first half scoring, deflecting in a feed from junior Michelle Huynh-Ba for her first collegiate goal. By halftime, MSU had established a 3-0 lead. But James Madison sophomore Baillie Versfeld moved in to capitalize on a scoring attempt, dribbling a feed from a penalty corner and firing a shot into the top of the Spartan goal to prevent a shutout Goudswaard netted two more goals in the second half and Beerman closed the scoring at the 7:12 mark, picking up her own shot, blocked by the JMU defense, and putting it in the net. "Christina (Kirkaldy) was stellar in the goal," said Madison of her netminder, who recently earned Big Ten Player of the Week and womensfieldhockey.com weekly honor roll accolades. "As usual, she had great, solid performance." Seasoned Spartans in the backfield contributed to a tight defensive unit. "Jacqueline Ahinga provided safety coverage in the back," said Madison of the senior. "She and Michelle Carstens had a great day. They were very alert." Next, MSU revs up to face Virginia in Charlottesville for a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday, Sept. 5.
