EAST LANSING, Mich.- - Michigan State wrestling announced its 2004-05 schedule Monday. The squad will once again face off against numerous wrestling powerhouses on the road to the Big Ten Championships March 5-6 at the University of Iowa. Nine of the Spartans' 14 dual matches are against teams that finished the 2003-04 season in the top 25. "As good as the Big Ten is each year, we know our conference schedule alone will be very tough," said Head Coach Tom Minkel. "Facing teams like Oklahoma and Oklahoma State just raises the level of competition." The Green and White will kick off the 2004-05 campaign at the Eastern Michigan Open on Nov 6. MSU will host its own tournament, the Michigan State Open, on the weekend of Nov. 20-21, where last year six Spartans finished among the top eight place winners. Michigan State has seven home matches this season as opposed just five a year ago. "We should have a pretty good team this year and we are lucky to be able to showcase our talents to our home crowd seven times this season," said Minkel. MSU will kick off its dual schedule on Dec. 8, at Jenison Field House against instate rival Central Michigan. The team travels to Stillwater, Okla., on Jan. 6 to clash with defending National Champions, Oklahoma State. The grapplers make their Breslin Center debut in their first Big Ten match of the season against Penn State on Jan. 15. MSU will battle for valuable Pontiac Challenge Cup points with Michigan on Feb. 18 in East Lansing, and closes out its regular season against on Feb. 25 against perennial wrestling power Oklahoma. The season will culminate once again at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Mo., with the NCAA Championships March 17-19.
