EAST LANSING, Mich. - Here are just a few of the summer happenings with the Michigan State women's golf team.
* Former Spartan Stacy Snider (1999-2002) will play in her second event on the LPGA Tour - the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic at the Squaw Creek Country Club in Vienna, Ohio, July 16-18. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native, who earned non-exempt status for the 2004-05 LPGA Tour, missed the cut in her LPGA debut after shooting a 152 (75-77) at the Corning Classic in Corning, N.Y., May 27-30. Snider, who is also playing on the Futures Tour, will get into an LPGA event based on a pecking order dictated by last year's money list and results from qualifying school.
In addition to Snider, former Spartan Becky Iverson (1986-88) is also competing at the Giant LPGA Classic.
* Snider will look to defend her title at the 2004 Detroit Newspapers Tournament of Champions, starting on Monday, July 19 at Boyne Mountain. Snider's victory at the 2003 Tournament of Champions marked the first time a female or an amateur won the prestigious event. The unique tournament format, which is now in its 12th year, combines juniors, amateurs, women, professionals and seniors in the same field but competing from different tees.
In addition to Snider, red-shirt freshman Kristen Polanski (Livonia, Mich.) and former Spartan golfer Jennifer (Kangas) Brody (1993-96) will also participate in the tournament.
* Sophomore Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio) qualified for the 2004 U.S. Women's Amateur, after shooting a 79 in sectional qualifying at the Edgewood Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pa., on July 8. Sophomore Mandi McConnell (Grand Blanc, Mich.) also qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur after shooting a 76 in the sectional qualifier at Glen Flora Country Club in Waukegan, Ill. This year's U.S. Women's Amateur will be held at the Kahkwa Club in Erie, Pa., Aug. 9-15.
* On June 29, at the Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti, Mich., on the Fidra Midwest Collegiate Series, junior Jennifer Johnson (Okemos, Mich.) took medalist honors after shooting a 150 (75-75). Sophomore Rachel Meikle (Fort Wayne, Ind.) placed third with a 156 (82-74), while red-shirt freshman Kristen Polanski (Livonia, Mich.) finished tied for fifth with a 161.
Johnson is currently first and Meikle is second for the Fidra Midwest Collegiate Series Player of the Year honors. In 2003, Meikle won the Midwest Collegiate Amateur Series Player of the Year honors in addition to taking the tour championship medalist honors at Sycamore Hills Golf Course.
* Former Spartan Sarah Martin (2001-04) took medalist honors with a 72 at the 88th Michigan Women's Amateur Championship at White Pine National Golf Club, in Spruce, Mich. Other Spartan golfers who competed at the Michigan Women's Amateur include: MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll; former Spartan Joan Garety (1975-78); and current Spartans Jennifer Johnson, Christy Jonkhoff, Kristen Polanski, Kelly Thesier and Amanda Wilson.
