TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Michigan State women's tennis team opened its spring break trip in Florida with a 7-0 loss vs. Florida International Saturday. The loss dropped MSU's record to 4-5, while Florida International improved to 3-4.
Michigan State managed just one doubles win, but the match was closer than the score would indicate, as four of the six singles matches went to a third set.
At No. 1 doubles, senior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) and junior Keri Thompson (Clark Lake, Mich.) earned an 8-5 victory, but the Spartans dropped the doubles point when freshman Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) and sophomore Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) fell at No. 2, 8-4, and freshmen Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) and Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) lost at No. 3, 8-3.
In singles, MSU had several close calls, including No. 2, where Lay lost to Mei Ly, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. At No. 3, Brady dropped a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 decision to Bruna Discordia, and Schnitzer lost a close match at No. 5 to Shilla D'Armas, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. At No. 6, Baron lost a close third set tiebreaker, 10-8, after winning the first game, 6-3, and dropping the second game, 6-2.
At No. 1, Thompson lost in straight sets to Paula Zabala, 6-1, 6-4, and at No. 4, Andrews fell, 6-3, 6-4, to Desanka Jovanovic.
MSU will return to action Monday when the Spartans face No. 54 Florida State in Tallahassee at noon.
