EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team had its two-match winning streak snapped Friday as the Spartans fell to Eastern Michigan, 4-3, at the MSU Indoor Tennis.
MSU scored first, sweeping the doubles matches to win the doubles point. In the No. 1 doubles match, the duo of junior Keri Thompson (Clark Lake, Mich.) and senior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) beat Victoria Domina and Jessica Loose, 8-4. At the no. 2 position, freshman Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) and sophomore Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) defeated Prapaiphan Kansuthi and Kendra Clark, 8-4. The No. 3 team of freshmen Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) and Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) beat Amalia Lincaru and Laura Fernandez, 8-3.
"Our doubles played extremely well today," said head coach Tim Bauer. "Those that weren't as successful tonight, just need to evaluate their game, and come back tomorrow and win."
Despite MSU's doubles success, Eastern Michigan won four of six singles matches to earn the team victory. At No. 1 singles, nationally-ranked No. 75 Domina defeated MSU's Thompson, 7-6(5), 6-4. In the No. 2 match, the Eagles' Lincaru lost the first match, 4-6, but overcame Lay, 6-0, 6-3 in the end. The No. 3 position saw EMU's Kansuthi defeat Brady, 7-6(4), 6-4. At No. 4, EMU's Clark swept Andrews, 6-4, 6-2. The No. 5 position brought hope to the Spartans as Schnitzer beast Loose, 6-0, 7-6(4), and at the No. 6 position MSU's Baron also saw a victory against Fernandez, 6-2, 6-4.
The Spartans (2-3) remain home Saturday as they face DePaul (4-4 entering a match tonight). Competition will begin at 11 a.m. and will be held at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
