EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's basketball player Kristin Haynie (Mason) has been nominated for the fourth annual Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS Award, which is presented annually to the nation's senior player of the year for NCAA Division I men's and women's basketball.
The Senior CLASS Award - an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School - was launched prior to the 2001-02 college basketball season. It is designed to honor the attributes of seniors who remain committed to their university and elect to pursue the many rewards that a senior season can bring.
From the initial list of 30 names, a national media committee will select 10 finalists for the award in February. In March, nationwide fan balloting will be coupled with results from voting by coaches and media to determine the winner.
Previous winners of the award include Sue Bird (Connecticut) in 2002, LaToya Thomas (Mississippi State) in 2003 and Alana Beard (Duke) in 2004.
Haynie is currently the only player in the Big Ten who is listed among the league leaders in scoring (21st - 11.3), rebounding (12th - 6.3), assists (fourth - 4.4), steals (first - 4.0), field goal percentage (11th - .526) and free throw percentage (tied for fifth - .889).
